MEN'S SOCCER ADVANCE TO REGION CHAMPIONSHIP, BEAT CUMBERLAND
Cougars dominate Cumberland, score four goals in convincing victory.
Blackwood, NJ -- Camden showcase all around play in convincing win over Cumberland.
The Camden County College Men's Soccer team commenced their post-season campaign with a decisive victory over Cumberland in the East District B Semi-Finals on Tuesday afternoon. The win sends Camden to the Regional XIX championship match for the second year in a row on Friday, October 31st at Ocean Community College.
Camden County struck early in the 11th minute as Vasco Perdiz converted a well-placed pass from Bono Wijnhoven to give the Cougars an early lead. The momentum from the early triumph carried throughout the match as the Cougars' midfield controlled possession and provided ample scoring opportunities. Rinze Muis capitalized shortly after, finding the net from a well-timed assist by Christian Jimenez in the 14th minute. David Mestre continued the offensive outburst, scoring at the 42nd minute as the Cougars went into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.
Defensively the Cougars were organized and stout, limiting Cumberland's scoring opportunities. Anchored by GK, Vigo Brander; the back-line was omnipresent on almost every Cumberland counter attack. Vigo Brander was able to make several key saves (7), preserving the Cougars advantage.
Captain, and first team All-Region XIX performer, Bono Wijnhoven was steady, leading his teamates while also showcasing his versatility all game. Bono made pivotal plays, pushed forward when the opportunity arose and registered an assist in his second straight game. Keji Nishikawa was also excellent in halting Cumberland's offensive attack, providing instinctual defense and timely plays.
While Cumberland was able to put one away in the second half, Nico Segarra quelled their momentum with a goal in the 70th minute. His 13th goal of the season proved to create an insurmountable 4-1 lead for the Couagrs with less than twenty minutes to play.
With the victory, Camden advances to the Region XIX Championship match where they will face off against Bergen Community College on Friday, October 31st at Ocean Community College. The Cougars will look to avenge an early season loss to Bergen and pursue a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament.
